What Auld Lang Syne Means | The Mary Sue

Olden Lore

Okay, some people know what "Auld Lang Syne" means, and some might even know some, most, or even all of its lyrics. But why do we sing it at New Year's … and what does it mean, anyway? Is this something we missed in school? A lost relic of times when we, as a people, drank buttered rum and roast goose at the holidays, somehow stowed away in the dusty attics of our minds, taken out once a year and covered with so many cobwebs that we can barely recognize it anymore? Depressed yet? Come inside, we will learn this together.

For starters, the phrase Auld lang syne is Scots, the language spoken in Lowland Scotland (not to be confused with Scottish Gaelic, which is spoken in the Highlands), and is translated as "old long since," but used more in the context of "long, long ago." In the case of the song and the lyric "for auld lang syne," it means something like "for old time's sake." The song that we know is a poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 that was set to the tune of an older folk song. But the phrase had been used in poems and songs for centuries before that.

But what does it mean? Here are Burns' lyrics, though they might not be of that much help, because much of it is in Scots. Lowland native David Tennant was unavailable, so we turned to Wikipedia for the English translation:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo (or my dear),
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp! (And surely you'll buy your pint cup!)
and surely I'll be mine! (and surely I'll buy mine!)
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes, (We two have run about the slopes,)
and pu'd the gowans fine; (and picked the daisies fine;)
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit, (But we've wandered many a weary foot,)
sin auld lang syne. (since auld lang syne.)
CHORUS
We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn, (We two have paddled in the stream,)
frae morning sun till dine; (from morning sun till dine;)
But seas between us braid hae roar'd (But seas between us broad have roared)
sin auld lang syne. (since auld lang syne.)
CHORUS
And there's a hand, my trusty fiere! (And there's a hand my trusty friend!)
and gie's a hand o' thine! (And give us a hand o' thine!)
And we'll tak a right gude-willy waught, (And we'll take a right good-will draught,)
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS

Basically, it's about getting drunk with people you currently enjoy while looking back on good times and remembering old friends, all while singing your sentimental, alcohol-soaked hearts out. The custom of singing "Auld Lang Syne" on New Year's began in Scotland, when the song was sung on Hogmany aka New Year's Eve. This spread throughout the British Isles and immigrants brought the song and the custom with them as they settled all over the world. Since then, the song is sung at any occasion that calls for a hearty look back at good times and tradition, like some military events, graduations, funerals (because some people sing at funerals, bless their hearts), and anything marking the end of a good run.

In North America, the song became a New Year's Eve staple thanks in large part to Canadian band leader Guy Lombardo, who started broadcasting his rendition of the song on the radio every year starting in 1929. He had a couple of versions of it, including this rousing one, which just SCREAMS disco (or just 1977):

He also has this gentler, "I just wanna drink champagne, eat chips and dip, and go to bed at 12:07″ version:

And now you know about "Auld Lang Syne." No more excuses. And we triple dog dare you to sing the Scots lyrics tonight.

Itineraries - 9 odd New Year's Eve ball drops

Courtesy of Walleye Madness at Midnight

The town of Port Clinton, Ohio, celebrates New Year's Eve with a 20-foot, 600-pound walleye.

By Lissa Poirot, Family Vacation Critic

When it comes to celebrating New Year's Eve with the kids, family-friendly events may be a little difficult to come by during a celebration that seems to revolve around champagne. Boston led the way for First Night celebrations with the very first First Night held in 1976. The New Year's Eve event banned alcohol, ensuring the countdown to midnight was family friendly. By 2006, more than a million attended the city's First Night Celebration. Today, First Night in Boston features fireworks at midnight over Boston Harbor, among citywide attractions. Other notable First Night cities include historic Old Town Alexandria, Va., Pittsburgh, Pa., Providence, R.I., and Bethlehem, Pa.

Still, there are other ways to celebrate New Year's Eve: finding the most unusual ball drop possible. Forget Times Square's ball drop, we have PEEPs, acorns, peaches, conch shells and kisses! Take a look at these, shall we say, more interesting, New Year's Eve ball drops:

Peach Drop

For Georgia Peaches and anyone else looking to enjoy New Year's Eve in the South, Atlanta's Peach Drop is the party to attend. The 800-pound peach is dropped annually in Atlanta's Underground, after a full day's fun. The Family Fun & Budding Peach Stage provides carnival-style rides, face painting, musical performances and more from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. All day and night, live music is performed in Kenny's Alley, with big screen TVs playing the Chick-Fil-A-Bowl before the evening festivities. This year, the band Kansas is the headliner of the night.

PEEP Drop

Bethlehem, Pa., may better be known as Christmas City USA, but it's also the home of Just Born Inc., the makers of PEEPS, those sugar-marshmallow concoctions that make their way to stores at Easter, Halloween and Christmas. Bethlehem's New Year's Eve celebration incorporates the famous treat maker's PEEPS with its New Year's Eve 25-pound fiberglass PEEP Drop. Families can enjoy PEEPS Fest from noon to 5 p.m. with live music, arts and crafts, S'mores, photos with the PEEPS Chick, movies and more. Bethlehem also offers a Family New Year's Eve Party from 1 to 3 p.m. at Musikfest Cafe with a kid-friendly DJ, crafts, face painting and bounce house.

Kiss Drop

Hershey, Pa., home of Hershey Chocolate, celebrates New Year's Eve with a giant Hershey Kiss drop at midnight. The free event takes place 9 p.m. to midnight at the Square in Hershey, with family-friendly musical performances (a Nickelodeon star will be performing this year) leading up to the drop. Once the giant kiss drops, fireworks top off the celebration. The event is non-alcoholic, and vendors will be on hand all night with snack options.

Beachball Drop

Life's always a beach on the Florida Panhandle's Panama City Beach. What else do you drop on a New Year's Eve but a giant beachball? The event takes place at Pier Park and features an 800-pound beach ball made of Waterford Crystal. The fourth annual drop features a family celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with family performance and ending with an inflated beach ball drop and fireworks. For those old enough to stay out later, more music, fireworks and the official beachball drop occur between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Acorn Drop

In Raleigh, N.C., forget the ball drop, it's a 1,200-pound copper acorn that welcomes in the New Year! The New Year's Eve festivities begins at 2 p.m. with children's celebration, followed by the People's Procession of costumed people with puppets marching down Fayetteville Street at 6 p.m. Knowing little ones can't stay awake until midnight, the town drops the acorn at 7 p.m. for an early children's countdown, and then again at midnight for the purists.

Crab Drop

Maryland is known for crabs and in Easton, Md., the end of the year is celebrated with a giant crab. The event is part of First Night Talbot (County) and includes a family drop at 9 p.m., reminding families that 9 p.m. is actually midnight in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and Easton is located in the mid-Atlantic. (Get it?) A second drop occurs at midnight, with the papier mache, steel-reinforced crab meant to look like the area's famed blue crabs.

Pickle Drop

Way back during World War II, bombardiers claimed to be so accurate that they could drop a bomb into a pickle barrel. This gave the Mt. Olive Pickle Company the brilliant idea of hosting a New Year's Eve Pickle Drop. The lighted green pickle is dropped at 7 p.m., which is midnight Greenwich Mean Time, so it's perfect for families who can make their way to Mount Olive, N.C., for the event.

Bologna Drop

Lebanon's bologna may not have a famous first name, but the Pennsylvania city has been making bologna for generations. As home to Weaver's Bologna, since 1885 Lebanon celebrates New Year's Eve with an annual bologna drop. The 12-foot-long, 150-pound bologna is actually the real deal it's literally bologna! Located just two hours from Philadelphia, the Lebanon event runs 10:30 a.m. to midnight with a number of events and entertainment to entertain the family.

Fish Drop

The small town of Port Clinton, Ohio, has landed in the public eye for its New Year's Eve celebration featuring a 20-foot, 600-pound walleye fish. The entire town goes gaga for walleye with restaurants serving up special dishes and a local winery creating a Walleye White. Events begin at 6 p.m. with a kids drop in the Family Fun Center, followed by games, music and a huge rock-paper-scissors contest! Even after 10 p.m., musicians are family-friendly, and after "Wylie" the Walleye fish is dropped, fireworks end the party.

ADHD Tip – Jenny McCarthy, A Gluten Free Diet, And A Battle ...

Just this evening I was speaking with a close friend about parenting and some of the struggles that we as parents face today. We talked about difficulties with bullying, progress reports, behavioral outbursts, as well as how to approach other parents when difficulties occur between children.

Shortly into our conversation, my friend asked me if I had seen the latest news on Jenny McCarthy and her son's struggle with autism.

No, I haven't, I replied.

While I might not have all the details down exactly, and I personally did not hear her talk, I truly believe the underlying message is what really counts in this case.

As it was explained to me, and from what I have read online, Jenny McCarthy's son has been diagnosed with autism. it all apparently came to light after her son suffered a few seizures and one that ultimately led to cardiac arrest. And this all happened while Jenny was on tour promoting her latest book at the time.

I might be missing some details here, but what is remarkable is that Ms. McCarthy did not simply rest with her son being diagnosed with autism.

Instead, she reached out for help. she turned to research and read up on the latest findings, the latest trends, and found out about certain alternatives that have worked for other parents.

After trying a gluten-free diet, it appears that her son has shown some improvement. according to her report, her son recently connected with a cartoon show where he had otherwise shown no interaction.

Just hearing her son laugh, she was brought to tears with the hope that perhaps something else was going on with her son.

Or perhaps that there was something more she could do.

Just maybe her son would be normal.

Here is a problem or difficult situation faced by many parents. Regardless of whether the diagnosis is autism or ADHD, the take-aways are the same.

  • You have to believe.
  • You have to fight hard.
  • You have to keep your options open.
  • You have to be willing to try alternatives – even if they never work for you.
  • You have to look for answers.
  • You need to be informed.
  • Most of all, you have to keep trying and fighting even in the face of despair and almost uncertain failure.
  • While a gluten-free diet might not be the answer for you or your child, or even ADHD for that matter, the important point is that you need to consider what else might be happening here.

What else might you be able to do to find out what is affecting your child?

You have to be willing to ask the questions.

Sure, Jenny McCarthy has the money and resources to explore these options.

An ADHD diagnosis can shatter your life as you know it, but it does not have to, especially if you do not stop with the diagnosis. You must continue finding out about the latest information and treatment options.

Can you imagine the devastation if someone got it wrong?

Or what if the slightest change in your life or your child's life made all the difference for your child with ADHD?

New Year's Eve: Ball Drop | Notes on Design

THREE, TWO, ONE, HAPPY NEW YEAR! Every year, nearly a million people descend on Times Square in New York City, the Crossroads of the World, the Center of the Universe, to ring in a new year, say goodbye to an old year, brace the weather and embrace each other. Those who choose to stay in their own cities, towns, and neighborhoods can tune in to Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve (Clark has been hosting the show since 1972), or an array of other network television broadcasts or live Web casts on laptops, computers, phones; the ball drop marks the start of the new year and is an event unto itself.

If a ball dropping atop the second-tallest building in the city seems to be a bit of a random custom, read on! We have the scoop on the New Year's Ball in New York City. Stick around; learn something new before launching forth into the cookies, glitter, fruitcake, and champagne of the holidays!

Though a giant orb descending to a rooftop seems like an odd event to mark the new year (not to mention to stage a celebration around), time balls are not at all new. A time ball was first used in 1833 at England's Royal Observatory in Greenwich to mark 1 p.m. Captains of ships used the ball drop to accurately set their navigational chronometers.

Forty-four years later in 1877, a time-ball was installed in New York City's Western Union. On days the ball simply refused to drop, Western Union flew a flag between 12:01 and 12:10 p.m. in lieu of the ball. To mitigate any confusion, the press would be informed as to whether the ball had dropped at the correct time and if it hadn't, what time it did drop!

The first New Year's Eve ball dropped in New York City's Times Square in 1907 to a crowd of thousands. This first ball was constructed of iron and wood and lit by 100 25-watt bulbs; it was just five feet across yet weighed 700 pounds.

Since 1907, the ball has undergone several changes and updates, as one might expect of an object expected to withstand high wind and changeable weather and, ideally, drop at a precise time. The first upgrade occurred in 1920; the new ball was made of wrought iron and was comparatively far lighter at 400 pounds. Thirty-five years later, the ball dropped some weight again; the redesign used aluminum, allowing the ball to weigh in at a mere 150 pounds.

The ball vanished during 1942 and 1943 due to electricity dim-outs during World War II. Those New Years were still met with crowds at Times Square and a single minute of silence followed by chimes. Imagine the power of silence amongst thousands of anticipatory partygoers in the moment before the chimes.

The ball dropped in 1955 was used through the 1980s and was re-outfitted with red and green bulbs to resemble an apple. The bulbs were changed again in 1991 to patriotic red, white, and blue in honor of Operation Desert Shield.

This ball was dropped annually between 1955 and 1999, re-outfitted as an apple in the 1980s and gaining rhinestones and strobes in 1995. Photo credit: The New York Times.

The millennium marked a new ball, measuring six feet across and weighing 1,070 pounds. The orb is a geodesic sphere comprised of straight lines and triangles.

It may look a bit like the Death Star, but this is the ball dropped in 2000. It is a geodesic sphere featuring 504 Waterford crystals, halogen lights, and mirrors and is currently on display at the Waterford Crystal Factory

2008 marked the 100th anniversary of the ball dropping in Times Square and the moment was marked with a new Waterford crystal ball, weighing 1,212 pounds and boasting Philips LEDs. Light emitting diodes are highly efficient; the ball uses as much electricity in an hour as two ordinary household ovens. The LEDs are also highly customizable, allowing programmers to create nearly limitless patterns and effects.

On its 100th year, the ball glows brightly with LEDs and new Waterford crystals

The ball gained both heft and girth in 2009, doubling its size to 12 feet across and weight to 11,875 pounds. In the weeks leading up to New Year's Eve, the illuminated year sign accompanying the ball was powered by stationary bicycles, storing the energy to batteries. Passers-by could work off those holiday cookies, do something good for the environment, and contribute to the sign far overhead.

So what's on the docket for this year? In keeping with positive changes made to the ball over the years, including size, durability, and efficiency, this year the ball itself (not just the sign) will be completely off the electric grid, powered by stationary bicycles installed at the exhibit in Times Square. Pedal off Aunt Edith's fruitcake and keep an icon lit!

What does this annual ritual mean for us as artists, as humans, as a community? Humans are primed to track time; we have been using time-keeping devices since ~500 BC. Our time-keeping devices may have gained beauty and precision over the centuries, but we are no less moved to comment on the passing of time.

Sundials and swatch watches track the minutes and are representative of the centuries during which we have been tracking time. Photo by Gary Brown

So many things have changed since 1907, but we still gather to share the passage of time, to tick down the seconds and cheer as a new year drops and rolls out to the crowds, the glitz, and the glamour embodied by New York City and Times Square.

As we reflect backward and look with hope forward, Happy New Year.

Michael Dyer Suspended, Will Miss Auburn's Bowl Game, According ...

Auburn's star sophomore running back has been suspended and will miss the Chick-fil-A Bowl on New Year's Eve.

Dec 11, 2011 - Auburn Tigers star running back Michael Dyer has been suspended, according to the Decatur Daily. The reasons for the sophomore's suspension have not been disclosed, but Dyer will miss the Chick-fil-A Bowl on December 31, where the No. 25 Tigers are set to face off against the Virginia Cavaliers.

Dyer put together a solid 2011 season for Auburn and was selected as first-team All-Southeastern Conference, coming in second in the SEC after averaging 103.5 rushing yards per game. In only his second year, Dyer has already etched his name in the record books. In 2010, he broke Bo Jackson's record for most rushing yards by a freshman. He was also named Offensive Player of the Game in 2010's BCS National Championship Game against the Oregon Ducks.

Entering the season as defending national champions, Auburn finished 7-5 overall in 2011, going 4-4 in conference play.

  Ledger-Enquirer.com | 12/31/2011 | Auburn football notes: Gene ...

ATLANTA -- Garrett Harper has been mostly an afterthought this season, a walk-on freshman receiver from Springdale, Ark. who came to Auburn along with Kiehl Frazier.

But he came up with a big play when the Tigers badly needed one early in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Trailing 7-0 in the first quarter and bleeding yardage to Virginia, Auburn forced a punt situation after Robenson Therezie tripped up Darius Jennings for a 1-yard loss on third-and-long. That's when Harper made his move.

Rushing hard off of the left side of Auburn's punt formation, Harper came flying into the backfield untouched and blocked Virginia punter Jimmy Howell's offering off of his foot.

"Our three guys that hit their shield are some of the biggest guys on the team," Harper said. "I just got to run through there. I was untouched."

Harper corralled the loose ball himself, although he probably could have picked it up and scored.

"After the play, I thought about it," Harper said. "I'm just glad I got the ball."

Auburn blocked another punt late in the third quarter after Carver graduate Gabe Wright sacked Michael Rocco to force Howell to punt from the shadow of his own end zone.

Howell tried to get a rugby punt away, but Blackson batted the ball out of the back of the end zone for a safety that gave Auburn a 37-24 lead.

Big hitter

Sophomore cornerback Chris Davis had an up-and-down season, but he came up big in the first half against a Virginia offense that likes to throw the ball short and let the receivers do the work.

Used as Auburn's boundary corner -- he lines up on the short side of the field -- because of his physical nature, Davis set the tone for Auburn's defense early.

Shortly after Auburn tied the score, Davis ripped the ball free from Virginia running back Perry Jones deep in Cavaliers territory, although Auburn was not able to capitalize when Cody Parkey missed a 44-yard field goal.

And Davis shut down Virginia's attempt to come up with a big play of its own on a trick play. Lined up for an apparent field goal, holder Jacob Hodges took off around the right side of the line on a fake, but Davis dropped him to force a turnover on downs.

Midway through the third quarter, Davis already had seven tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup.

Special again

All season long, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik has said the Tigers have to win the special-teams battle to win games.

And the Tigers' special teams units crushed Virginia on New Year's Eve.

In addition to the two blocked punts, kicker Cody Parkey recovered his own onside kick after Auburn's second score, came back from an early miss to blast three field goals and punt returner Quan Bray had a 62-yard return to set up one of the kicks.

Chizik had planned the onside kick beforehand.

"We told them after we scored the first touchdown we were going to do it, and I forgot," Chizik said. "But we promised we'd do it."

Penalty problems

Back-to-back unnecessary roughness penalties in the second quarter helped set up Virginia's second touchdown. Defensive end Corey Lemonier was flagged on the first play for making contact after the whistle, and cornerback Jonathon Mincy drew the second for a hit away from the play.

Quick hits

Safety Ryan Smith subbed in for starter Demetruce McNeal on three straight drives in the first half. McNeal started 12 of Auburn's 13 games. … Twenty-eight Auburn players saw the first bowl action of their career in the Chick-fil-A Bowl … Little-used sophomore cornerback Ryan White saw his first meaningful action on defense in nearly a month.

Michael Dyer indefinitely suspended for ... - Ledger-Enquirer.com

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn running back Michael Dyer has been temporarily removed from the team due to an undisclosed violation of team rules.

And the sophomore running back will not take part in bowl practices leading up to Auburn's Chick-fil-A Bowl appearance against Virginia on New Year's Eve.

Asked about Dyer's status with the team, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik paused for nearly 20 seconds to find the correct phrase.

"He's been temporarily removed from the team," Chizik said. "He's not going to be playing in the bowl game, he's not going to be practicing in the bowl game."

Chizik offered no new timetable for Dyer, who was suspended indefinitely over the weekend.

"The suspension is going to be until he does the things we feel like he needs to get back at Auburn and get back in an Auburn uniform," Chizik said. "If he does that, he'll have a chance. If he doesn't, he won't."

Replacing Dyer's production in the running game will be no easy task. Dyer ranked second in the SEC with 1,242 rushing yards and scored 10 touchdowns this season. A week ago, Dyer was named a first team All-SEC performer by both the Associated Press and the SEC coaches.

In Dyer's absence, junior Onterio McCalebb and freshman Tre Mason will have to carry a much heavier share of the load in Auburn's backfield.

Used primarily as Auburn's speed threat on the outside, McCalebb rushed for 532 yards this season and caught 30 passes out of the backfield. With Dyer in the backfield, McCalebb's role was clearly defined.

He may be asked to carry the ball inside more against Virginia in Dyer's absence, but McCalebb, who declined to comment on Dyer's temporary removal from the team, is not going to change his approach to the game.

"I'm just going to be Onterio," McCalebb said.

Mason is the only other back on Auburn's roster to carry the ball this season.

At 5-10, 190 pounds, he is listed 16 pounds heavier than McCalebb, which may give the freshman an opportunity to help fill Dyer's punishing role as Auburn's power back.

Used mostly as a kick returner or out of the Wildcat formation this season, Mason has rushed for 97 yards on 19 carries this season.

Mason, who battled hamstring issues during the middle of the year, averaged 26.4 yards-per-kickoff return and scored a touchdown before giving way to McCalebb late in the season due to ineffectiveness.

But he will have to carry the ball much more against Virginia.

"I was always looking for this chance, and I'm just going to do the best I can to contribute for this team," Mason said. "I'm 100 percent ready for this."

McCalebb and Mason are the only running backs available on Auburn's roster. Anthony Morgan is still out with a knee injury, and both Corey Grant and Mike Blakely are redshirts this season.

Whether or not Auburn finds a third option at the running back position remains to be seen during the Tigers' preparation for the Chick-fil-A Bowl, which started with Monday night's practice.

Chizik said the team is mulling over some options at the position.

"We're looking at some different possibilities right now," Chizik said. "I'm not going to say who they are right now, because they're just ideas we're throwing around."

Mason may be the only one suited for Dyer's role as an every-down back.

Only a freshman with limited playing experience, Mason has roughly three weeks of bowl practices to get ready to handle a bigger load.

"He's played enough this year to give himself a chance to contribute," Chizik said. "If he's going to carry a bigger role in this game, he's got a lot of work in front of him."

Watch Ball Drop: 2012 New Year's Eve Celebration In Times Square ...

New Year's Eve might just be the only time of year when "dropping the ball" is a good thing. And this year, nearly one million people are expected to ring in 2012 by watching the shimmery ball make its descent in Times Square.

The iconic New Year's Eve celebration kicks off at 6 p.m. when the ball makes its way to the top of One Times Square in New York City.

But it's not necessary to be in the middle of the chaos in order to enjoy the festivities.

New Year's Eve revelers can watch the festivities from the comfort of their own homes, live on the Internet through the official Times Square live stream right here.

In addition to the customary Times Square party, HuffPost Media has a roundup of other New Year's Eve television options.

This year, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has invited Lady Gaga to hit the button triggering the ball's descent at 11:59 p.m. Other artists such as Drake, Pitbull and Justin Bieber are also scheduled to perform throughout the night.

The 2012 New Year's Eve Ball is decked out with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles and weighs 11,875 pounds, according to the official Times Square website.

Temperatures near midnight are expected to be in the 40s, according to The Weather Channel, and the unusually warm weather is expected to draw record crowds to the epicenter of the celebration, WABC News reports.

New Year's Eve was first celebrated in Times Square in 1904 to observe the opening of The New York Times' headquarters, according to the Times Square Alliance. The first ball drop was in 1907, and the tradition has been going strong ever since, with the exception of two years during World War II.

Auld Lang Syne: New Year's Eve Song Lyrics a Mystery to Most

new year's eve

At the stroke of midnight on New Year's eve, most people will kiss, hug, and sing a stirring rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Well, about a quarter of us will. The rest will just kind of just mumble along to the tune and what Auld Lang Syne even means.

A recent poll found that 37% of the population doesn't know a single word of Auld Lang Syne, while about 75% can't make it through a full verse. According to the Daily Mail, the origins of the song are even more of a mystery. One in 10 people under the age of 25 believe that either Elvis Presley or Paul McCartney wrote the words.

Isn't that ridiculous? Elvis? Oh wait, you don't know who wrote it either….  Auld Lang Syne was written by Robert Burns in 1788.

So most people don't know the lyrics or the origins. OK. Understandable. It is a really old song. What about the meaning of the title? According to the survey, nearly two thirds of people did not know that Auld Lang Syne roughly translates to "As Time Goes By."

So if most people don't know the words but most people still sing the song. what do they do on New Year's eve. According to the survey, which was conducted for the new movie "New Year's Eve," most people decide to hum the tune when their memory fails them. Some, however, are able to improvise.

A common and incorrect verse of Auld Lang Syne goes: "Should old acquaintance be forgot, and something else that rhymes. Should old acquaintance be forgot. Something Auld Lang Syne."

Do you know the words to Auld Lang Syne? Will you be singing it on New Year's Eve?

Here are the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

CHORUS

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o'kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary fit,
Sin' auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne.

And there's a hand, my trusty fere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.

Happy New Years!

What Does Auld Lang Syne Mean And Why Do We Sing It On New ...

You're probably going to go to a New Year's Eve party tonight and as soon as the clock strikes 12, somebody will inevitably start slurring the tune "Auld Lang Syne" because they heard it in a movie. But people very rarely nail down the correct melody, nor do they know all of the words. And what does "Auld Lang Syne" even mean?

It began as a poem written by Scotland's Robert Burns in 1788 (with a few of the lyrics cribbed from a James Watson ballad from 1711 called "Old Long Syne"). The tune is a traditional Scottish folk song, and it quickly gained popularity in the U.K. as a song sung at the end of the year as well as at funerals. As Brits emigrated to other parts of the globe, the tradition spread, and took hold in the United States as early as 1896. It didn't become a popular American staple in this country until band leader Guy Lombardo played the tune during his year-end radio broadcast in 1929.

The title of the tune literally translates to "Old Long Since," though people readily accept "Long Long Ago" or "In Olden Times" as reasonable transpositions. The first verse goes a little something like this: "Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?/ Should old acquaintance be forgot and days of auld lang syne?/ For auld lang syne my dear/ For auld lang syne/ We'll take a cup of kindness yet/ For auld lang syne." That second part is actually the chorus, but it usually just gets treated as another verse.
